GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — No injuries were reported after a knife was recovered from an Ottawa Hills High School student following a fight on Tuesday.

In a letter to parents, Principal Timothy Mabin said a fight involving multiple students began before classes Tuesday morning. Administrative staff and the GRPS Public Safety & School Security team stopped the fight soon after.

A knife was then found inside a student's bag nearby. It isn't clear if the bag belonged to a student who was involved in the fight.

The fight is believed to have stemmed from "altercations" between the students that happened over the weekend.

Mabin said school security officers use metal detectors every day to make sure no weapons enter the school. There is an investigation underway to determine how the knife was not detected.

Mabin is now encouraging parents to talk with their students about bringing weapons to school.

"This incident serves as an important reminder for families and scholars to discuss what items are appropriate and safe to bring to school," Mabin said in the letter. "I also encourage you to take advantage of the school safety resources provided by GRPS, which include information on safe weapon storage, access to free gun locks, and safety training sessions."
