Outage impacting thousands of car dealerships across the country, West Michigan

According to experts, the CDK Global outage is causing headaches for car dealerships across the country, impacting things like sales and repairs.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — According to experts like Brian Long and Mike Wall, the CDK Global outage is causing headaches for car dealerships across the country.

"What this company does is it provides all sorts of support to dealers all around the nation in terms of their paperwork, documentation, and scheduling for service," said Wall.

"It involves about 15,000 dealerships, but it's not just the dealerships," said Long. "It's the dealership customers that are involved in, this means millions of people may have had their data breach."

CDK Global is the software company that handles the day-to-day paperwork for dealerships, something that has caused these businesses, to go back to pen and paper.

Long is the Director of Supply Management Research at Grand Valley State University

"This is going to slow down that whole process of getting your automotive title, and in some instances, in the case of credit information and that type of thing, it's going to slow down the whole credit check system that has to be in place before, once again, you usually purchase an automobile," said Long.

While there's thousands of dealerships that are impacted, not everyone uses them.

As an auto analyst, Wall said the attack that started in the middle of June, said the outage comes at a time when the auto industry was regaining traction after the recent union strikes.

"I mean, they're a resilient bunch," said Wall. "They find a way to get the deal done and service the customer. I mean, that at the end of the day, is really, what it's all about. "
