GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — West Michigan, the senior population needs your help ahead of the colder season.

Meals on Wheels Western Michigan is searching for volunteers to bring food supplies to Kent and Allegan County residents before winter is upon us.

Staff and volunteers will be loading up and delivering emergency meal boxes on Saturday, Oct. 19. Anyone who has a few hours to spare is asked to sign up for a route.

The winter months can bring unpredictable weather. It can be hard for regular meal deliveries or volunteers to reach seniors during messy weather conditions, causing food barriers.

The October volunteer day hopes to help.

“Winter storms have the potential to disrupt deliveries, but no senior should be without access to the nutrition they depend on,” said Lisa Wideman, President and CEO of MOWWM. “Thanks to the support of our amazing volunteers, we are able to provide shelf-stable emergency meals, ensuring that seniors continue to receive the nutrition they need, no matter the weather conditions."

You must be over 18 to volunteer to drive deliveries, but passengers can be any age. Organizers say pickups will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and routes take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

The pickup location is at 2900 Wilson Ave SW Suite 500 in Grandville.
