ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A new study by the University of Michigan claims that older Michiganders use cannabis products more than older adults in other states.
The study, which surveyed about 4,100 people 50 and older, found that 27% of Michiganders in their 50s used a cannabis product containing THC in the past year. The average rate of adults in their 50s who used cannabis in the last year from other states is only 21%.
The study also found that 35% of Michiganders aged 50-64 and 18% of Michiganders aged 65 or older used a cannabis product that contained THC in the last year.
When asked for a reason for their cannabis use, most respondents said they used it to relax, help with sleep, feel good or help with pain relief.
The older users in Michigan prefer edibles, beverages, tinctures and smoking cannabis flower when consuming cannabis.
Over half of cannabis users have discussed their use with their doctors, and the study shows that the older the user, the more likely they have discussed it with their doctor.
Michigan was among the first 10 states to legalize recreational marijuana when voters passed Proposal 1 in 2018 by a margin of 56% to 44%.
