GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Heather Becker-Hulswit's 18-year-old son is an Oxford High School shooting survivor. For her family, Nov. 30 is filled with sorrow and hurt.
"There are things that trigger him, like the sound of helicopters and sirens, still trigger and you'll see him kind of close in on himself," said Heather.
17-year-old Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 at the time, has pleaded guilty to 24 charges for the shooting that killed four students and injured seven others.
"That day was the worst day of my life as a mom and as a teacher, because my job number one has always been, I want to keep my kids here in my classroom safe," said Heather. "And that didn't happen that day in Oxford."
Classmates of those victims are now speaking out to the Oxford School board. On Tuesday, they told the board that more should have been done to protect the district.
"I want everyone directly involved with the 30th and the horrors of that day erased completely with anything to do with Oxford," said a student.
"You were responsible for keeping us safe, we trusted you, you will never earn that trust back," said another.
While there is still anger and frustration throughout the Oxford community, Heather said her son has found comfort and solace through a new club called Students Supporting Teachers.
Recently, the club handed out coffee and donuts for teachers.
"Each teacher got more than one handwritten card from a student in the building, telling them why they were important and thanking them for staying with them and helping them," said Heather. "I mean, they're pretty amazing with what they've been through and the love, they still are able to give."
