MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — Two parks in West Michigan are about to get a major facelift thanks to nearly $800,000 of state funding coming their way.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday over $6.4 million in Land and Water Conservation Fund Grants will be awarded to parks in nine counties statewide.
“By investing in Pure Michigan, we support local economies, our fast-growing outdoor recreation industry, and improve quality of life for Michiganders," said Gov. Whitmer.
Here in West Michigan, we can expect massive upgrades to Bear Lake Park in Muskegon County and Sluka Field in Ottawa County.
Bear Lake will be awarded $499,700 for their tennis and pickleball facilities, while Sluka Field will get $293,900 for general renovations.
The rest of the parks across the state include:
- (Berrien County) Dickinson Park development: $260,000
- (Clinton County) McGuire Park and river access improvements: $157,800
- (Keweenaw County) Keweenaw Point acquisition: $3,500,000
- (Macomb County) Lake St. Clair Metropark Daysail Trail development: $500,000
- (Oakland County) Stony Creek Ravine Nature Park access: $340,100
- (Roscommon County) Metro Park renovation and development: $410,000
- (St. Clair County) Parker Road West Campground development: $500,000
"Today’s upgrades will increase access to rivers and nature parks, create outdoor courts and fields, and renovate parks that people of all abilities can use and enjoy every day. Let’s keep working together to make Michigan a better state to live, work, and play," said Whitmer.
Applications for park improvements in 2024 will be available soon here. They're due on April 1.
