Part of Lyon Square in Grand Rapids now open with new features

The $12 million project broke ground last year after planning for it began in 2015.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Construction along the Grand River is moving along.

Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. announced on its Facebook page that part of Lyon Square is now open.

The news comes a day after 13 ON YOUR SIDE learned more about a proposal to build three new towers at the site of the old Charlie’s Crab restaurant on the river.

People were seen walking at Lyon Square and enjoying the scene on Tuesday.

Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. said part of the square now has features like heated pavements, a scenic overlook, accessible pathways and more greenery.

The $12 million project broke ground last year after planning for it began in 2015.

This area is tucked away in between the DeVos Place and the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.

13 ON YOUR SIDE caught up with one person who happened to be walking by, who said they love the update.

"I really like it. It's a big change and I am looking forward to seeing how it all meshes out through things but I like the outside part, the benches are great, it's gonna be a great addition,” said Tom Osterwald.

According to Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., more updates are on the way as the project continues.
