HILLSDALE COUNTY, Mich. — No one was injured in a plane crash involving an instructor and a student in Western Michigan University's Aviation Program in Hillsdale County around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to Michigan State Police, Jackson Post troopers responded to a field by Mosherville and Rainey Road for a small plane crash.
WMU Aviation said the crash involved a WMU Cirrus.
Troopers said an instructor and a student were working on stalls and the plane wouldn't start. After several unsuccessful attempts to restart the plane, the two decided to deploy a parachute attached to the plane and had a control fall to the ground.
According to WMU Aviation, the deployment of the parachute is called the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS).
Troopers said the Federal Aviation Administration was on the scene and conducted an investigation and WMU Aviation said there will be an ongoing investigation into what caused the crash.
The plane will be on the scene for a few days as WMU removes it, troopers said.
