Plans for wind farm in Casnovia Township move forward

The Casnovia Township Board approved a special use permit, but with several conditions that still need approval from the wind farm company.

CASNOVIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Plans for a wind farm on the Muskegon/Kent County line are moving forward.

The Casnovia Township Board has approved a special use permit for a proposed wind farm project.

Sempra Energy, an Ohio-based company, wants to build the wind farm across Casnovia Township in Muskegon County and Tyrone Township in Kent County.

The company is requesting permission to build 30, 500-foot wind turbines. Township officials say if the project continues moves forward, it would likely be closer to 27.

The board approved the special use permit with several conditions which the company must still approve. Once that happens, the township will still need to review the site plan and placement of each of the turbines.

Tyrone Township has yet to approve its portion of the plan.

Previously, community members complained that the wind farm would potentially drop property value.
