MUSKEGON, Mich. — The man accused of hitting and killing a motorcyclist in Muskegon County is asking for more delays in his criminal case.
Police said Dane Neino crossed the center line and killed Nathan Conrad last year.
Neino sat in court Monday afternoon refusing another plea deal. His attorney told the judge that he needs more time to go over evidence with his client.
Judge Matthew Kacel accepted the defense's request for more time. That decision was upsetting to Nathan's wife Mary when she heard it in court.
“The last day he was alive that day he was killed, he said that he just wanted to spend 40 more years with me and raise our girls together," Mary said after the hearing. "And he literally lived the rest of his life with me. It was six more hours. That's all we got.”
Mary said her family can’t heal until they find justice.
“We should all be able to live our lives and move on, but we can’t until this is done and over with,” said Mary.
Judge Kacel explained to the courtroom what was behind the decision to push the hearing back.
“There's a legal issue regarding the causation elements or the facts of this case regarding whether or not Mr. Neino was asked to remove the vehicle off the victim or whether or not that could be a causation,” said Judge Kacel.
Mary’s attorney, Loryn Schlinker, explained their understanding of a claim made by the defense that caused the discussion.
“It sounds as though the defense’s attorneys is trying to argue in the deputies attempting to move the vehicle, that’s what ultimately caused the death,” said Schlinker.
Although the delay is difficult for Mary’s family, she said they continue to look back on the memories they had with Nathan.
“He was happy, he loved talking, he enjoyed going to church on Sundays with us, he was just the ultimate family man,” said Mary.
Judge Kacel expressed to the defense that this would be the last time the case would be delayed, with a new hearing to be scheduled within 30 days.
