2 rescued after wave nearly capsizes pontoon boat in Van Buren Co.

Deputies were able to pull the two people onboard and secure any property that was floating in the water. They then escorted the pontoon back to the rental dock.

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — Two people were rescued Saturday in Van Buren County after a pontoon boat was nearly capsized.

Deputies say it was around 6 p.m. when a rented pontoon boat with 10 people on it was heading toward the pier. A three-foot wave crashed into the boat, causing the front end of the boat to go underwater. Two people onboard were thrown into Lake Michigan. Deputies said the boat began spinning and nearly capsized.

Marine deputies with the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office were stationed about 50 yards away when the incident happened. They were able to pull the two people onboard and secure any property that was floating in the water.

Deputies then escorted the pontoon back to the rental dock.

No one was injured.
