PORTAGE, Mich. — One person is dead and another is injured following a fiery two-vehicle crash in Portage Sunday morning.

According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, police and fire crews responded to the area of Sprinkle Road and Centre Street for a reported two-car crash.

The department said while crews were responding, the Kalamazoo County Central Dispatch received reports that one of the vehicles was on fire and the driver was still inside.

The Portage Fire Department put out the fire when they arrived at the scene and attempted to resuscitate the 18-year-old male driver from Scotts, Michigan.

He was transported to the hospital where the department says he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 25-year-old man from Kalamazoo, was taken to the hospital for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

According to officials, the preliminary investigation states both cars were traveling northbound on Sprinkle Road when the first vehicle crashed into the back of the second vehicle, sending them both crashing into a utility pole.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 329-4567 or Silent Observer at 343-2100, www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
