GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A new amphitheater and soccer stadium are coming to downtown Grand Rapids and now, 13 ON YOUR SIDE is learning about new housing that could be built near the attractions.
Grand Action 2.0 and the Downtown Development Authority are proposing two new high-rise towers that would give hundreds of people a place to live.
These two towers, if approved, could bring 735 apartments to this area along with commercial and retail space.
City staff will discuss the plan on Wednesday morning at the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority's meeting.
If approved the apartment building that would sit near the amphitheater, could be built as soon as 2026. It would sit at 21 stories high and include 475 apartments and a six story parking garage, all for the price tag of $271 million.
The other building would be placed close to the new soccer stadium near the downtown YMCA. It would be a mix of office, retail and residential space with 260 apartments.
That building would cost $115 million.
Jono Klooster, with the city of Grand Rapids said this project could potentially help with the housing crisis.
“We know we need more housing of all sorts, market rate middlemen income affordable for rent and for sale, we need all of that. And so this is a great opportunity to leverage this very significant investment in downtown Grand Rapids to deliver on some of those outcomes for the city,” said Klooster.
If approved, construction for the building near the amphitheater would begin as early as 2025, and the other building's construction would begin in 2026.
