Rain not stopping crowds from attending World of Winter

While rain did drizzle down on the performers for Fire and Ice, it didn't stop a good sized crowd from gathering around Rosa Parks Circle.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — While rain did drizzle down on the performers for Fire and Ice, it didn't stop a good sized crowd from gathering around Rosa Parks Circle.

With raincoats and umbrellas in tow, Heidi Hofstra came out with her family and friends.

The Hofstra family showed up to World of Winter last year, taking in all of the events, with positive reviews all around, they decided to give the second year of the winter festival another go around.

"I Just like that there's something for us to do outside during the winter," said Hofstra. "It's hard to get outside, especially when it's kind of dreary, but to have something fun to look forward to."

Friday's show was a reschedule, the original date was rescheduled because of, well, too much winter.

"Michigan weather can be really, really unpredictable. So we're always trying to be as prepared as we can for it," said Bill Kirk with Grand Rapids Inc. "But when it comes to the festival, and our events in the art installations as well, we're just prepared for anything as it comes."

Grand Rapids Inc. is the organization behind bringing World of Winter to life.

While some events have had to be canceled, there's a whole bunch of art installations gathered around the city that can be viewed even if the weather doesn't want to cooperate.

"We always want to keep the festival open to people," said Kirk. "So when it comes to the art installations, people can check those out at any time."

And despite the challenges, Kirk said, they've seen a lot of interest in this years festival.

"In general, what we've discovered over the years is that people in Grand Rapids and anybody visiting, they're pretty hearty, they're pretty prepared, and they're willing to brave the elements to come out and enjoy the festival," said Kirk.

World of Winter goes until March 10. For a full list of activities, click here.
