Registration for Grand Rapids ArtPrize 2024 now open

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids' ArtPrize 2024 has now opened registration for artists hoping to compete. Artists from all over the world are encouraged to enter their works which will be on display all around the city.

The winner will receive a grand prize of $125,000. Other finalists will receive a portion of the $400,000 prize pool.

"We're looking for works of all sizes and vision, works that defy traditional categorization, innovative proposals for permanent public artworks, and dynamic exhibitions that can transform spaces and engage audiences," read the announcement. "Whether you're an emerging artist looking to bring your vision to life or an established creator aiming for a significant impact, ArtPrize is the place to be."

The competition will have new, revamped and returning grants this year. Their hope is to infuse this year's competition with a "vibrant array of art and design." The grants add up to a total of $200,000 available. The aim of the grants is to ignite creativity and diversity.

List of available grants:

  • Featured Public Projects: Supports the creation of large-scale public artworks for high-visibility locations during the event, with a total of $60,000 in funding available. Applications close May 17.
  • Future Public Projects: Invites artists to propose permanent public artworks for Grand Rapids, offering $15,000 - $25,000 amongst numerous artists for the fabrication of maquettes, which will be featured in the ArtPrize competition. Applications close May 17.
  • Hero Project: New this year, this grant for ambitious and unconventional artistic ideas. This grant encourages unique contributions that can enhance the ArtPrize event through diverse forms of art. Applications close May 31.
  • Venue Exhibition Grant: Supporting ArtPrize venues to curate exceptional exhibitions with a focus on collaboration between venues and artists. Applications close May 31. 
  • Artist Seed Grant: Assists emerging artists in bringing innovative works to ArtPrize, offering financial support to cover various artistic and logistical expenses. Applications close May 31. 
  • Motu Viget Grant: Celebrates and supports the talent within Kent County zip codes by offering grants to local artists across different categories. Applications close May 31. 
  • Sculpture Grant: Seeks to feature exceptional sculptural work, providing funding to support the exhibition of significant sculptures presented throughout ArtPrize. Applications close May 31. 
  • Request for Qualifications for Digital Animation and Project Mapping: Seeking a commission for a digital artist/animator to create a data visualization crowdfunding project. Applications close May 31
