DETROIT — While Michigan ranks 10th in population, the state had the most money wagered in the United States via online gambling in 2023 (excluding Nevada’s poker-only market), according to a new report.
The American Gambling Association (AGA) released their report of the commercial gaming industry’s financial performance in 2023 last week. The report shows gaming revenues by state from 2023.
For a third year in a row, the gaming industry posted record revenues, growing substantially in sports betting (up 44.5% year-over-year) and online casino games (also known as iGaming, up 22.9% year-over-year).
A good portion of that growth was seen in Michigan, as the state ranked first in online wagers in 2023 with $1.92 billion wagered iGaming.
Michigan beat out New Jersey by only $115,500 to become the top iGaming market in the country.
Despite being ranked first in iGaming, Michigan ranks fifth overall in gambling revenue by state with $3.6 billion in 2023.
States with the Largest Gambling Revenues in 2023
- Nevada - $15.5B
- New Jersey - $5.8B
- Pennsylvania - $5.8B
- New York - $4.7B
- Michigan - $3.6B
Detroit also ranked as one of the top 20 commercial casino markets by revenue in 2023, raking in $1.236 billion. Detroit ranked eighth overall, just above St. Louis and just below Philadelphia. The Las Vegas Strip ranked number one with $8.833 billion in revenue in 2023.
