MICHIGAN, USA — West Michigan native and photographer Nick Irwin has launched his fourth calendar collaboration with Michigan-based Meijer.

Many of the photos in the calendar were taken in West Michigan, like Grand Rapids' iconic Blue Bridge or Holland’s colorful springtime tulips.

“It’s just about getting out and doing it,” Irwin said. “I’d call it freestyling – I’d just drive around and look for something like sunflower fields or a nice sunset.”

In 2017, Irwin, a native of Grand Rapids, grew a love for taking photos with his iPhone. Fast forward to now, his work can be found all over the state.

“I was taking shots with my camera on my phone and some people were like, ‘Oh, what kind of camera you have?’ and finally to go buy a real camera,” he said.

With over 22,000 followers on Facebook, Irwin has certainly caught the attention of many Michiganders. However, he credits his success to not waiting around to be noticed.

“There’s a lot of good photographers out there but you have to be unique and learn how to sell yourself. Not everyone will come out and find you. That’s my biggest piece of advice.”

Irwin credits his success to his marketing degree from Grand Valley State University. He said his knowledge of sales and marketing helped push him to reach out to companies, which opened the door to new career opportunities.

“That was four years ago.. and they've been growing it ever since,” he said. “They've been selling very well so it's a lot of fun… It's really cool to see your work in a store that large.”
