The Rockford School District is investigating an outbreak of flu-like gastrointestinal symptoms among members of the varsity football team.
In an email, Superintendent Mike Shibler says district officials are trying to determine if the illness is from the school or another common source. He adds that no other athletes are displaying symptoms.
Rockford schools officials are conducting tests on air and water quality to rule out an airborne or water source. They are requiring students to drink only bottled water until the testing is done.
Shibler says the water at the schools is tested annually, with the last test conducted earlier this spring. The district is taking extra steps to clean and sterilize equipment and facilities.
The school has reached out to the Kent County Health Department and are working with them to ensure that they are following all appropriate protocols.
