ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Mich. — A mother charged with open murder in the death of her 2-year-old in Sturgis Township is heading to trial.

Paige Bohne, 21, of St. Joseph County, had her case bound over to circuit court on Friday.

Deputies said around 12:50 p.m. on Nov. 7, they were dispatched to the Memory Lane Trailer Park at 25039 US 12 for an unresponsive child.

When they arrived, deputies attempted to revive the 2-year-old but were unsuccessful. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the child's death, the Major Crime Task Force was activated, the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office says.

An investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding the child's death, which deputies said led investigators to take Bohne into custody for involuntary manslaughter.

She was then charged with open murder and denied bond.

Deputies said Bohne is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said he appreciates the responding law enforcement who tried their best to revive the child and recognized the suspicious circumstances.

“The loss of someone is always difficult, but the loss of a child is especially tragic, and it impacts the whole community," Bingaman said.

Support services are being made available to the family and the first responders dealing with the incident.

No trial date has been set yet.
