NILES, Mich. — An SUV that fled a traffic stop in Berrien County early Tuesday morning crashed into a pizza restaurant's facade, sparking a fire.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office said around 4:50 a.m., a deputy spotted an SUV speeding along US-12 near Weaver Road in Bertrand Township.

The deputy tried to pull over the driver, but the driver refused, launching a brief chase.

It all ended when the suspect SUV lost control on a curve and crashed into Saylor's Pizza Port in Niles.

The SUV came to rest inside the pizza restaurant which then ignited a fire, causing extensive damage to both the building and the vehicle.

The suspect was the only person inside the car, and that person had non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies took the suspect into custody at the scene of the wreck.

The driver is facing preliminary charges of fleeing and eluding as well as possessing a stolen vehicle.
