MUSKEGON, Mich. — Over half of the apartments in a Muskegon senior living complex were damaged early Sunday morning by a ruptured fire suppression supply pipe.

Around 4:20 a.m., the Muskegon Fire Department was called to a fire sprinkler activation alarm at Nelson Place Apartments located at 350 Houston Avenue.

When units arrived at the complex, they said they found a ruptured six-inch fire suppression supply pipe on the top floor of the four-story complex.

According to the department, the fire suppression system is equipped with a diesel-powered water pump to allow the flow of water at approximately 150 gallons per minute.

The ruptured pipe caused water damage to 53 out of 101 units at the complex. Of the damaged units, 24 were deemed too dangerous for residents to stay there, the department said.

The department said the Red Cross is currently at the complex to assist the displaced residents, but it may be several weeks before they can return to their units.

One resident was taken to the hospital with health issues that were unrelated to the event and no other injuries were reported, according to the department.

The Muskegon Fire Department was assisted by the North Muskegon, Muskegon Township and Norton Shores Fire Departments.
