Elderly group cools off, makes friends during heat wave in Walker

The center is located at the Walker Fire Department and is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

WALKER, Mich. — As this heat wave continues, many are talking about how protect those most vulnerable to the heat. That includes our seniors.

Some seniors have been able to find refuge from the heat at the Senior Neighbors Center, located inside the Walker Fire Department.

“It's wonderful on days like today, because the weather is so hot outside, and there's definitely great air conditioning in here,” said Kathy Dawson.

Dawson says she's joined many other seniors who visit the center often.

Christina Turkewycz, Senior Neighbors volunteer supervisor, says this center opened in November and has become a place where seniors can come and get cool when needed.

"Especially with the weather the way it is now, is a great place to stay cool, to have a bit of socialization, and just to make sure that you know they're meeting safe and healthy,” said Turkewycz.

The center provides meals, entertainment and gives people a chance to mingle with others, like Sid, who's been coming since March.

"We had a lawyer come in, we had a technician come in, music comes in, entertainment. These people are pretty good dancers, but I don't dance, you know, so I don't go to their parties that they have, but they still party at their age,” said Sid.

“He's right about the music. They do a nice job with the music,” said Dawson.

"This is home. That's what I think. I was here on opening day, and I haven't missed a day since, and I don’t plan to,” said Luther.

This is one of five cooling centers the organization provides.

Right now, Senior Neighbors is handing out box fans for a $1 fee to any seniors who need one. They are also providing window air conditioning units.

If you want AC unit, you'll need a doctor's note and documentation for that. They also provide rides to any of their senior centers in Kent County.
