S.S. Badger docked for repairs after 'mechanical issue' Saturday night

The mechanical issue left the boat without power, according to a passenger on board.

LUDINGTON, Mich. — The famous Lake Michigan car ferry, the S.S. Badger, is docked and won't be making runs on Sunday after a "mechanical issue" experienced during a trip Saturday night.

According to a Facebook post by the S.S. Badger around 8 p.m. on Saturday, after departing Manitowoc a mechanical issue arose on the way to Ludington.

13 ON YOUR SIDE spoke with S.S. Badger officials who said the power was out on the ship, but there was no threat to the safety of the passengers.

A viewer also reached out to 13 ON YOUR SIDE and said his wife was on the ferry and she said the power had gone out.

A passenger commented on the Badger's Facebook post and said the delay lasted for about an hour and a half and that the ship's personnel were communicative about the problems.

The S.S. Badger said the issue was identified and addressed, allowing the ship to safely continue its trip.

Since the boat arrived late, the evening trip to Manitowoc on Saturday was canceled.

Around 1:40 a.m., the S.S. Badger made another Facebook post that said they were continuing to work on the ferry and Sunday's crossing was canceled.

Around 10:15 a.m. Sunday, another post was made that said due to ongoing mechanical repairs, the 8:45 p.m. trip from Ludington to Manitowoc was canceled.

It is not known how long the mechanical issue will cause the Badger to be out of operation.
