Structure fire causes major damage to vacant building in Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a structure fire on the 300 block East Water Street at about 5:53 a.m. Tuesday morning.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — There were no injuries after a structure fire caused serious damage to a building in Kalamazoo Tuesday morning.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to a report of a structure fire at a vacant building on the 300 block of East Water Street at about 5:53 a.m.

KDPS said that firefighters arrived at the rear of the building engulfed in flames, but were able to deploy multiple hose lines and contain the fire within about 30 minutes. Some firefighters remained on the scene to check for and extinguish the remaining hot spots.

The building has been vacant for over a decade and no one was injured from the fire, KDPS said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the KDPS Fire Marshal's Office and they said they will provide updates when they become available.
