MUSKEGON, Michigan — Students at Reeths-Puffer High School are being sent home early Wednesday after a bullet was reportedly found in the building.
Superintendent Steve Edwards sent out a note to parents at 9:40 a.m. saying that a bullet was found on the floor of a bathroom in the high school. Edwards also sent out a robocall and a text message with the information.
Edwards said law enforcement was immediately called after the discovery. Out of an abundance of caution, authorities recommended a dismissal. Law enforcement is assisting the school with an investigation.
While evacuating the high school, a person completely unrelated to the situation and off school grounds fired one to two shots. Police located the person and confirmed the shots were unrelated.
Busses were sent to the school around 9:45 a.m. to take students home.
Law enforcement did not recommend the evacuation of other buildings, especially sending young children home to potentially empty homes.
Edwards says the school has canceled all extra-curricular activities for Wednesday evening, and the school is still deciding whether to hold classes tomorrow.
Police are in the process of investigating the source of the bullet.
