Student-run barbershop opens inside Boys and Girls Club offering free haircuts, universal business skills

This is the first barbershop of its kind to operate inside a Boys and Girls Club, officials said Wednesday.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore now has a barbershop located inside.

The new addition is called 'Club Clips.'

Children will be able to get free haircuts at the club roughly once a month by barbers and beauticians in the community who volunteer their time.

Students will run the business side of the barbershop including tasks like scheduling appointments and cleaning the space.

Board Member Jon Covington explained, "What they'll learn here operating this business, they can take anywhere, because it really boils down to some basics, right? What is my product? Who is my customer? What does it cost?"

Incoming 10th grader Zaenevia Johnson will work inside the barbershop. She told 13 ON YOUR SIDE, "I'm excited for how many lives it's going to change especially for kids that are unable to get their hair done"

With quite a few career options on her mind, she's looking forward to how this opportunity will help her in the future,

The plan is for students to eventually receive formal training through Club Clips so they can leave high school with a license in the beauty industry.

As of its opening, Club Clips will be open once a month for a few hours.
