After pause in construction, restoration to resume on historic Sullivan Field

If you build it, they will come — or in this case – if you rebuild it, they will return.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Fans of Valley Field announced that the Sullivan Field grandstand construction will start again this fall after construction crews found extensive damage and wood rot.

Crews paused the project to reevaluate the field’s damage and found that the $4.25 million project would cost more. Sullivan Field was built in 1937, and over time, Michigan’s weather has eroded and rotted away at the stand’s wooden structure.

A new goal for fundraising efforts will be posted by the end of August.

The field is famously known for hosting the Grand Rapids Black Sox, the Grand Rapids Sullivans and has hosted games for over 70 major league players.
