GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Teacher of the Week is back!

If there's a teacher in your life who you think deserves some recognition, here's your chance!

13 ON YOUR SIDE Mornings is launching Teacher of the Week. 

Here's how it works:

Send in your nominations to our email at news@13onyourside.com or text us at 616-559-1310. Make sure to include a short explanation of why the educator deserved to be recognized, as well as a photo.

Then every Monday, a winner will be announced.

Teacher of the Week Winners

The winner of Teacher of the Week on Feb. 7 was Starr Elementary School Teacher Geri Macklin. Macklin started teaching when she was 40, and she says she is glad she took the leap. She says her favorite thing about teaching is helping students gain a love for reading. 

The winner of Teacher of the Week on Feb. 14 was Tanner Opple with Riley Street Middle School. Opple is a 7th grade teacher and basketball coach. He grew up in West Michigan and said teaching is an "opportunity to give back to the community and embrace the community that helped shape me."

On Feb. 21, the winner of Teacher of the Week was Dickinson Academy Cultural Center teacher Cindy Rivera. Rivera was a teacher for more than 20 years in Puerto Rico before making the big move to Grand Rapids. Now, she is an ESL teacher who is more determined than ever.

The winner of Teacher of the Week Feb. 28 was Timberland Charter Academy Teacher Deron Hunter. Hunter started off as a graphic designer but decided to go back to school for teaching. Now, he has been in the business for more than 10 years and is focused on creating a safe space for students to discuss heavy topics.
