Third-party uses public information to target voters, addresses in Ottawa County

At the Ottawa County Clerk's Office this week, a few voters have stopped by to ask questions about texts targeting some in Ottawa County.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — At the Ottawa County Clerk's Office this week, a few voters have stopped by to ask questions about texts targeting some in Ottawa County.

It reads "If you live at _______ , return your ballot ASAP."

"Unfortunately, it can be really confusing for voters, and that's why we always encourage people make sure that you are going to a verified source when you're looking at election information," said County Clerk Justin Roebuck.

It's followed by a link that brings voters to a State of Michigan site that details absentee ballot information.

While not malicious, it's brought up some questions from those within Ottawa County.

"They're running their data, and basically texting voters, reminding them to turn in absentee ballots, said Roebuck. "Again, that's not coming from an election official. It's coming from a third party with access to public records."

That third party is VoteWin. Their website says they're an organization that is "Mobilizing the whole nation to go to the polls and make our voices heard."

Roebuck said if you're unsure of anything you can always call the county clerk's office or go to the Michigan Secretary of State's website.

"As a voter, it can get confusing when you've got multiple organizations trying to communicate with you, and it's always good to just check back to make sure that that information is verifiable," said Roebuck.
