MICHIGAN, USA — As the snow rolls in and everyone takes shelter, it's important to keep your furry friends just as warm.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) said there are five rules of thumb to remember when it comes to keeping pets and livestock safe in winter weather.
First and foremost, bring animals inside whenever possible, or make sure they have dry bedding.
Pets that live inside the home should have limited walk and bathroom time to avoid freezing temperatures and livestock need a dry shelter to get out of the elements.
“While each individual animal tolerates the cold differently, animals that are young or elderly, short-coated, and/or have chronic health conditions can be more susceptible to frigid temperatures,” said State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “It is important to work with your veterinarian and know your animal’s limits in cold weather to prevent hypothermia, frostbite, and more.”
Next, take whatever steps necessary to make sure the animals' water doesn't freeze.
Move water bowls inside, change the water frequently, use tank heaters or use heated water bowls so the animals won't become dehydrated.
The third step involves checking paws for injuries and cleaning deicers off of them.
Walking on cold, icy surfaces can cause paw pads to crack or bleed and deicers used in the winter can be toxic to pets.
Your pets will be best protected if you wipe down their paws and legs when they come inside, use pet-safe deicers or even apply a paw protectant before letting them run in the snow.
Keeping animals at a healthy weight throughout the winter is important for their overall health during the colder months. They may need a few extra calories to be able to maintain body heat.
Of course, it's best to contact a veterinarian to determine your pet's specific nutritional needs.
Finally, if antifreeze spills anywhere, it must be cleaned thoroughly and quickly. Antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which is very dangerous for animals.
With these tips, MDARD said you can look forward to a safe, happy winter with the animals you love most.
