Traditional parking meters going away in Grand Rapids | Here's how to pay to park

Since 2018, pay stations have been used south of Fulton Street. Now, the remainder of the city will make the transition.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — The City of Grand Rapids is completing its transition from single space meters to pay stations.

Since 2018, pay stations have been used south of Fulton Street. The meters can also be found on Wealthy Street and on the west side of the river near New Holland.

Now, the remainder of the city north of Fulton Street will make the transition.

Instead of paying at a single space meter, people parking in the city will now park as normal and walk to the nearest pay station.

The stations accept payments with credit cards, coins and use a mobile app called MOTU.

As of March, MOTU, a parking app for Grand Rapids, has a feature that allows the use of Apple Pay.

Jennifer Kasper, the assistant director for the Mobile Grand Rapids Department, said the pay stations should make paying for parking easier and more accessible for the community.

"It allows us a lot more flexibility to accept credit cards, not all of the single space meters that we had throughout the city had the ability to accept credit cards. So this is just a lot more reliable," Kasper said.

She said the pay stations will help the department to pull reports when necessary.

The stations will also provide people with a receipt so they can have proof of payment for reimbursement for traveling or work purposes.
