GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Nearly 5,500 participants gathered at Van Andel Arena for the 32nd annual Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning. The event, presented by Blue Care Network of Michigan, transformed the city streets into a celebration of fitness and community.

“It’s fun to start this way, and end the day later eating the turkey and having a meal together,” fourth-year runner Julie Lloyd told 13 ON YOUR SIDE.

The event featured multiple race categories to welcome participants of all ages and abilities. Young runners took part in the LMCU Mini Trot, a free entry event for children 12 and under, while the My Team Triumph race provided a special opportunity for individuals with disabilities to join in the fun. This year, runners navigated a slight route modification due to ongoing construction at the intersection of Fulton Street W and Division Avenue.

The highlight of the morning was the 5K community run/walk, where families, friends and seasoned runners alike came together to celebrate health during the holiday. For families like the Bultemas, the annual event is a tradition drawing relatives to the finish line every year.

“We love it because it means that Thanksgiving is more than just the food or the pumpkin pie, that it's about community, it's about our faith, it's about supporting those and being grateful for all that we've been given to and being a blessing to others too,” Cindy Bultema said.

With a fundraising goal of $100,000 already achieved, the Turkey Trot aimed to break last year's participation record of 5,834 runners. The ultimate target for 2024 was an ambitious 6,000 participants.

"We are so grateful to see the overwhelming support for the Turkey Trot, both in terms of fundraising and participation," race director Holly Visser said. "It's a true community effort to bring this event to life, and we are excited to continue supporting GRPS scholar-athletes."
