United Way Day of Caring draws hundreds of volunteers to work on projects on the lakeshore

Projects ranged from landscaping and yardwork to painting, food preparation and event support.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Muskegon, Newaygo and Oceana County's United Way Day of Caring happened on Friday and hundreds of volunteers got to work to complete community projects.

United Way of the Lakeshore said the event was open for individuals, families, teams and corporate teams to participate.

Projects ranged from landscaping and yardwork to painting, food preparation and event support.

Brad Hilleary, CEO of Webb Chemical and Trace, alongside Karen Knapp, the team lead for Webb Chemical and Trace, spent the day at Mona Lake Park in Muskegon Heights.

Knapp said United Way reaches out to their company ahead of time with project options they can choose from.

This year Webb and Trace as well as some other local companies came out to work on numerous projects at Mona Lake Park.

"We think it's very important to give back to the community, and this is a great way to do it right, right in our hometown," Knapp said.

One project in particular was cleaning, taping and painting a basketball court.

The group also worked on a soccer field and tennis courts, in addition to cleaning playground equipment and picking up litter.

New park benches were even installed.

Hilleary said the event reflect the mission of United Way well.

"United Way on the Lakeshore has been around now for almost 100 years if not just over 100 years, and at its core, it's all about people helping people," Hilleary said. "...This is a day, specifically once a year, that people can come out and with their hands and feet, help other people."
