GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The family of a Grand Rapids man stuck in a Mexican hospital said they've received the miracle they were searching for.
On Saturday, Brett Sorensen's parents, Jean and Ray Sorenson, reached out to 13 ON YOUR SIDE sharing their son's story.
“We're simply here in an act of desperation as a last resort. We don't have much time. And when I say we don't have much time, we're talking already he should have been out of here a few days ago,” said David Shirey, Sorensen’s best friend who's in Mexico with him.
Brett traveled to Cancun, Mexico for work when he became ill, eventually needing to be placed in a medically-induced coma.
At this time, Brett's family asked not to share specific details about what caused him to become severely ill.
Shirey said doctors in Cancun did everything they could to keep Brett alive, but eventually realized he needed to be transported to a hospital in the United States for more care.
Because of this, Brett's family spent hours reaching out to any hospital they could in West Michigan, across the state and in other states.
Unfortunately, they said none of the hospitals they contacted were able to accommodate Brett and place him in an ICU bed.
That’s when they reached out to 13 ON YOUR SIDE to tell Brett’s story, in hopes that someone with a connection to a hospital would be able to help them.
“If there's people out there that that work at a hospital, that know of a hospital we haven't contacted, or know of a way that we can get a bed let us know. We’re ready to go. We just need an [ICU] bed,” said Ray.
On Sunday, Shirey told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that Trinity Health was working with the family to transport Brett back to Grand Rapids within the next 24 hours.
Details about Brett's arrival are limited at this time and his family was unable to speak on camera.
However, Brett's family wants the community to know they appreciate the support they’ve received over the last day and hope to continue to provide updates on his condition.
If you would like to further support Sorensen, a fundraiser has been created for him and his family.
