VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A man was killed Monday after crashing into a tree in Van Buren County.

Deputies say the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on 84th Avenue in Keeler Township. A 54-year-old Dowagiac man was driving a 1957 Chevy Bel Air when he crashed headfirst into a tree.

First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene.

Responding deputies were initially kept from treating the man by a "very aggressive" dog that was also in the car. The dog was uninjured and was returned to family members.

Investigators say they believe the crash happened because the driver lost control due to flooding on the roadway.

Because the Chevy was an older model, it did not have airbags or seatbelts.
