GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The holidays are right around the corner and it could be a lonely time for our veterans living in assisted living homes.
That is why Michigan Veteran Homes around the state are asking for your help to put a smile on their faces.
The Veteran Homes are asking you to send a letter, banner, colored food tray liners or personal messages for the holidays. There are currently about 350 veterans in their care around the state, including about 130 in Grand Rapids.
Veterans Home staff said sometimes this may be the only message veterans receive around the holidays.
Here's how you can take part:
- Write in large letters with dark ink, and write a personal note on each card.
- If you are making multiple, put them all in one big box and either drop them off or mail them to the veterans.
- If you are sending just one, you can put it into an envelope.
The vets home said paper food tray liners are also good because they are used during every meal service.
13 ON YOUR SIDE spoke to a veteran who says this small act means a lot during the holidays.
"I never had children, but I sort of adopt the kids and when they send the cards into it warms them, because there's lots of veterans here that are grandparents that don't get to see their grandchildren," said Robert Troost.
Letters can be and hand-delivered or mailed to this address: 2950 Monroe Avenue NE in Grand Rapids, 49505.
