Grand Rapids | Free water being given to those affected by water main break

For three hours, the City of Grand Rapids and SpartanNash handed out cases of water bottles for residents under the boil water advisory.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — For three hours on Monday, the City of Grand Rapids and SpartanNash handed out cases of water bottles for residents under the boil water advisory.

"When we have an opportunity to help we always want to take advantage of that. It's something that's sort of the fiber of who we are at Spartan Nash," said Tony Sarsam.

On Sunday, neighbors in northeast Grand Rapids started noticing they had little to no water pressure.

It took more than 24 hours to repair the line near Coldbrook St. and  Eastern Ave. in Grand Rapids.

City Commissioners Milinda Ysasi and Lisa Knight said they're still not sure what exactly caused the disruption.

"But we are working diligently to figure that out so that we can go back and check out what we've done, what hasn't been done, what we need to do moving forward, and how we can better strengthen our systems here in the city," said Commissioner Knight.

By Wednesday, Commissioner Ysasi believes the boil water advisory will be lifted.

"We do believe that we'll be able to get through the required 48 hours of testing come clear, we understand that some people may want to wait longer," said Commissioner Ysasi. "Those are all personal pieces. We'll follow the appropriate guidelines, cut no corners."

Water distribution will continue on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. while supplies last. Residents will receive one case of water per vehicle.

Drivers are asked to access the distribution point at 1635 Leonard St. NE. Traffic patterns in the area will be adjusted to accommodate the distribution so volunteers ask drivers to be patient and follow staff instructions and temporary signs.
