GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Walker mother accused of malnourishment, abuse and neglect of her infant is now facing charges—and court documents are showing what led up to her arrest.
22-year-old Angel Lunsford was charged earlier this month with first-degree child abuse.
She had taken her 3-month-old girl to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital on Nov. 23 when the baby was lethargic and not eating. Hospital staff determined the baby was suffering from "non-accidental head trauma" and had subdural hematomas and retinal hemorrhages.
Lunsford later admitted that she had shaken the infant "four to five times" and described the baby's head as "going back and forth." Police found photos on Lunsford's phone that show the baby appearing unresponsive after being shaken.
The timeline of the incident shows that Lunsford waited three days before taking the baby to the hospital.
Court documents also detail the baby's malnourishment, claiming she had only gained one pound since being born. Court documents say Lunsford fed the baby about three times a day, and that there were stretches of 10 to 14 hours where the baby went without food.
Court docs claim the baby has never been to a pediatrician.
Lunsford's probable cause hearing was held Tuesday. She waived her preliminary hearing and has been bound over to circuit court.
