WAYLAND, Mich. — After a sudden cardiac emergency sent him to the hospital, Chief Jim Stoddard is finally making progress.

Wayland's Fire Chief was sent to Butterworth Hospital in critical condition on April 26. Now, he heads to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital to continue recovering.

"We are very proud of him and how hard he has worked to get to this point in his recovery," the department said in a post

After first announcing his situation, the department said he would need the community's care.

"We understand that our community is incredibly generous and supportive, so the question 'what can we do to help?' will inevitably arise. At this time, we request all to uplift Chief Stoddard, his family and his medical team in your prayers," the post said.

They began a campaign to send Stoddard letters while he was in the hospital and asked for prayers each Sunday.

"We now look forward to the next big milestone when we get to welcome Chief Stoddard back home!" they wrote Monday.
