MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — The family-owned chain of gas stations located all over the Mitten are donating thousands to charities.
Wesco’s annual “Round-Up” campaign ended up collecting $446,450.88 statewide. The donations, which are a direct result of customers rounding up their purchases at the checkout counter from October through December, are then directly donated to designated charities.
“It’s our way to give back to the community,” said Muskegon County Wesco location manager April Armstrong. “It's crazy to think like how much we were raising even five years ago. I mean — we might have had $100,000 as a whole company — and now with that roundup option that was like a game-changer for us.”
Managers like Armstrong participate in a vote to decide where the money will go. This year, she said she and five other locations within the county chose Kids' Food Basket. On Tuesday, the store presented a check for $64,000.
“It's great to see how much it's helped,” Armstrong said. “Kids’ Food Basket has been where we've gone for a while (and) I've built a really great relationship with Stephanie from Kids’ Food Basket, and I love to surprise her with like a giant check. And it's great to see how much it's helped.”
In December, Kids’ Food Basket shared their thanks to Wesco stores on Facebook, saying in part, “We were honored to be selected!”
They wrote, “Wesco, we are beyond grateful for the generosity and passion you donate to this critical work in our community.”
