VAN BUREN COUNTY, Michigan — Talk about a close call.

A man in Van Buren County's Colombia Township was doing yardwork on Friday, May 10 when he unearthed what looked like a partially-buried grenade.

Police were called and initially investigators thought it was a training grenade.

However, the deputy noticed that the grenade seemed altered, so they called in the bomb squad from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Investigators from that unit determined the grenade was not a training explosive or dud, but rather a live explosive. They determined it had been modified to serve as a "live, improvised explosive device," the sheriff's department said.

They believe the grenade had been outside for "several years."

The bomb was moved to a safe location where it was detonated by the squad's bomb technicians.

No one was injured in the incident.

Police have not said whether they believe there was ill-intent to the grenade, nor whether they're looking for any suspects.
