West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science closed Monday due to threat

Staff said an anonymous threat made last week was determined to be not credible, but some social media posts created "new concerns" that are being investigated.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science is closed Monday due to threats being made on social media.

In a letter to parents, the school administration said there was an anonymous threat against the school last week. While that threat was found to be not credible, there were social media posts that created "new concerns," the school said. Those posts are now under investigation.

The closure on Monday was out of an abundance of caution.

School staff said they are working with the Walker Police Department as they investigate. Students were also reminded that any threats made against the district will be taken seriously, and students can face consequences.

"We encourage all families to take this opportunity to discuss the importance of responsible social media use at home," the administration said in the letter to parents. "Misinformation and speculation can quickly escalate situations, causing unnecessary fear and anxiety. If your student encounters anything concerning on social media, please contact us or law enforcement directly so we can address it appropriately."

Since the start of September, a slew of schools in West Michigan and across the state have investigated threats. Some schools closed for investigation.

The districts of Comstock, Mona Shores, Grandville, Jenison, Three Rivers, Byron Center, East Kentwood, Northview, Forest Hills and Newaygo have all addressed threats made this fall.

In addition, a teen who called in a threat against Mona Shores is facing charges, along with three high school students who made threats against South Lyon East High School.
