GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A local nonprofit is advocating for LGBTQ+ youth in the foster care system.

D.A. Blodgett St. Johns (DABSJ) is bringing awareness to the need for safe and affirming homes for LGBTQ+ youth in foster care during Pride Month.

Nearly one-third of youth in foster care identify as LGBTQ+, according to the Human Rights Campaign. The nonprofit says that number is much higher for youth in foster care than the general population.

That's why DABSJ is actively looking for foster parents from the LGBTQ+ community.

“To some, there is a discussion of whether to allow foster parents from the LGBTQ+ community. For DABSJ, we are actively seeking foster parents from the LGBTQ+ community,” said DABSJ Chief Programs Officer Joel Bell. “We are looking to do what is best for each child as they heal from trauma, abuse, or neglect. Having an inclusive approach is key to that.”

The nonprofit said they recognize the unique role that LGBTQ+ foster parents can play and plans to continue to adapt to meet the needs of all children and families.

DABSJ said that these children can face additional challenges and disparities in care because of prior trauma.

“LGBTQ+ youth in foster care need safe and loving homes just as all children do,” said Bell. “During Pride Month, we want to especially reach out to those who might join us in providing that crucial support for youth in care. Your love and acceptance can make all the difference in their lives.”
