Black bear kills family bunny in Whitehall-area overnight

Andrea Misch posted on Facebook that she heard a noise around 2:30 a.m. and saw that her bunny cage had been knocked around.

WHITEHALL, Mich. - A mother isn't sure what to tell her daughter after a black bear killed the family bunny overnight.

Andrea Misch posted on Facebook that she heard a noise around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, and saw that her bunny cage had been knocked around. She said she thought it was a raccoon, but when she opened the door to retrieve the pet, she saw a black bear.

She posted surveillance photos of the ordeal.

"The first picture was of the bear killing our bunny. Vienna is going to be devastated! Not sure how I will tell her without traumatizing her?!" Misch wrote.

Misch told 13 ON YOUR SIDE the bear didn't look fully grown, likely between 18 and 24 months.

Black bear sightings aren't uncommon in West Michigan. This year, there have been sightings in Muskegon, Kent and Ottawa counties.
