MICHIGAN, USA — Ready or not—here comes the snow! As winter conditions slowly creep into the forecast, it’s a good idea to start preparing to drive in the snow.
Beginning Wednesday night, rain will mix with snow as the temperature drops. This is expected to continue into Thursday and may accumulate throughout the day.
You're encouraged to make sure your car is ready to handle wintry conditions before that first snowfall. Check your car's fluids and tire pressure, and replace old windshield wipers. You should also check your car's battery and consider replacing it if it's weak.
Keep essentials in your car in case you get stranded or have an emergency. Here’s a list of winter weather essentials to pack before hitting the road:
- Ice scraper
- Extra winter clothes
- Spare blanket
- Snacks
- Portable phone charger
In case you get stuck in snow or need to call for help, keep these emergency supplies stocked in your vehicle:
- Snow shovel
- Sand or cat litter for tire traction
- Traction mat
- Road flares
- Flashlight
- Reflectors
Winter driving reminders
When roads get snowy or icy, drivers should slow down and be careful when braking or turning. Leave plenty of room between your car and the car in front of you. Using cruise control is not recommended on slippery roads.
The Michigan State Police are also reminding Michiganders that vehicles with four-wheel-drive, front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive still need to be careful in wintry conditions. Since these vehicles are less likely to slip, drivers may think the roads are safer than they are.
