COLOMA, Michigan — A woman is dead after a standoff with the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, deputies say.
The standoff began around 3:37 a.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Pearl Street in Coloma. A woman called 911, saying people were going to try to set her house on fire.
A police officer arrived and saw the woman pointing a long gun at him. He retreated for cover and called for backup.
The woman apparently told 911 operators multiple times she wanted to shoot police officers.
A tactical team was called in to help with the situation. They made contact with the woman, who had a rifle in her hand, pointed at officers. They asked her to drop the weapon and come out with her hands up.
Police got a search warrant to enter the home, but while they were attempting to go inside, "less lethal" rounds were fired. One of them hit the woman in the upper chest.
First responders took her to the hospital, where she later died.
Michigan State Police will now investigate the situation.
The woman's name will not be released until family can be notified.
As is protocol, the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative until the investigation is complete. His name is has not been released by police either.
