MASON COUNTY, Mich. — Michigan State Police are looking into a house fire that claimed the life of one woman in Sheridan Township, Troopers say.

The fire broke out around 12:40 p.m. Monday at a home in the Fountain area, police say. The owner, a 60-year-old woman from Tennessee, just moved to Michigan.

The woman called 911 to report the fire. She then ran into the home to bring her dogs to safety and told dispatch she was going back into the home to save her cat.

By the time Troopers arrived, they were unable to safely enter the home due to intense smoke, heat and flames, officials said. Fire crews extinguished the fire and dragged the woman out of the home.

First responders attempted to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Hart Post at (231) 873-2171.
