Grand Rapids clinician: While mental health conversations are becoming more open, follow through is key

Thursday marks World Mental Health Day to help promote conversations, treatment and combat stigmas around mental health.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Thursday is World Mental Health Day.

It's a day to raise awareness about mental health, promote education and combat stigmas attached to mental health.

Experts at Wedgwood Christian Services in Grand Rapids say in the last several years, there have been more open conversations about mental health.

But where Outpatient Clinician Hana Testerman sees things fall short is the follow through. That means, things like actually getting treatment or taking care of yourself.

"There are a plethora of fantastic mental health providers in Grand Rapids, so would encourage people, finding a therapist can be a journey," said Testerman. "The first person you get connected with might not be the best fit for you, and that's okay. It doesn't hurt our feelings. If we're not a good fit, we want you to find the provider that can really help you."

If you are looking to follow through on your mental health, Wedgwood sent us tips to deal with things like anxiety. You can find that information below:
