Fun displays are popping up around Grand Rapids as part of this year's World of Winter

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The World of Winter Festival's opening event has been postponed due to weather.

The Luminary Light Night Parade was originally scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday.

Nonprofit Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., which is the organizer of the festival, posted on their Facebook page announcing the postponement Friday morning.

"It appears that we've summoned a winter storm," the post reads.

The storm is expected to drop at least eight inches of heavy, wet snow across West Michigan on Friday, with additional rounds of lake effect snow over the weekend. High winds will cause near-blizzard conditions that will make driving hazardous.

A date for the parade will be rescheduled and announced at a later date.

The World of Winter Festival is the largest winter festival in the nation. Visitors can enjoy art installations, ice sculptures, activities, a scavenger hunt and more. It runs until March 10.
