CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Video shows semi truck traveling wrong way on US-131

Footage from the 13 ON YOUR SIDE Walker tower camera shows cars begin to slow down as the semi truck drives against traffic before coming to a stop.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — No injuries were reported after a semi truck got on northbound US-131 the wrong way early Tuesday morning, according to Lt. Michelle Robinson with the Michigan State Police.

The 13 ON YOUR SIDE Walker tower camera captured the truck traveling against traffic. Cars began to slow down and a brief backup was caused. Police arrived at the scene shortly after the semi came to a stop.

While northbound US-131 was never fully closed, traffic slowed as troopers worked to turn the semi around.

Wrong-way drivers on US-131 have been common in Grand Rapids. Nearly a year ago, new detection systems were placed on wrong-way signs on parts of US-131 to help curb the issue. When a car is detected going the wrong way, lights on the sign will start flashing, a camera will begin recording and police will be notified.

The systems were put in place after officials saw a 34% increase in fatal wrong-way driving accidents from 2015 to 2018.

It is unclear if there will be any charges in connection to this incident.
